Help-by-Phone Pantry
“For the poor will never cease out of the land: therefore I command you, You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy, and to the poor, in the land.” Deuteronomy 15:11 [RSV]
The food pantry we host in Berwyn Presbyterian Church is part of a network of 8 food pantries within Prince George’s County run by the organization, Help by Phone, Ltd.
Our food pantry serves people in Laurel, Calverton, Beltsville, College Park, Berwyn Heights, Greenbelt, and Riverdale. We are open Monday through Friday, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., except for holidays. The pantry is staffed by church members who volunteer their time and labor.
The clients simply call the telephone number for Help by Phone, 301-699-9009, and they will be interviewed to determine their need. Then they will be directed to the food pantry serving their zip code. When our food pantry receives the client information from Help by Phone, we pack an emergency supply of food for them based on the size of the client’s family.
Help by Phone, Ltd., relies on private donations and grants to keep the eight pantries supplied with food. In addition, our own pantry receives contributions of non-perishable food items from neighboring churches, generous individuals, and local businesses and organizations. We also receive monetary donations.
There is a basket in the narthex of the church where people can donate non-perishable food items. They can also contribute through the offering plate by designating the amount for the “BPC food pantry”.
